Danville math teacher wins presidential award

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Danville teacher has been named the recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The Advocate-Messenger reports (http://bit.ly/19Usdyw) Suzanne Farmer is a math intervention teacher at Toliver Elementary, providing supplementary math education for students who need extra support.

She is one of about 100 recipients nationwide.

The winners are awarded $10,000. They also will be recognized at an event in Washington, D.C., at a later date.

Farmer said the application process was time consuming, but she was encouraged and supported by her school and the district.

Farmer's position at the school is partially paid for by a grant through the Kentucky Center for Mathematics.
